On the anniversaries of Modest Mussorgsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Modest Mussorgsky are two great Russian composers whose anniversaries are celebrated in 2024. Both of them had a huge influence on the development of Russian classical music and left behind a significant creative legacy.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was born in 1844 and began his musical career as a conductor and teacher. He is famous for his operas, including Sadko, The Snow Maiden and The Tsar's Bride. His style is characterized by the use of folk motifs and colorful orchestral arrangements.

Modest Mussorgsky was born in 1839 and was one of the founders of the «Mighty Handful» - a group of composers who sought to develop Russian music based on national traditions. His best known works include the opera Boris Godunov and the song cycle Without the Sun. Mussorgsky is known for his innovative approach to composition, his use of dissonance and his experiments with form.
